How to Convert SGPA to CGPA?

A simple method to convert SGPA to CGPA is to add all your SGPA scores. Then divide it by the number of SGPAs added. The answer will be your CGPA. There are two methods of SGPA calculation explained below.

Method 1: Weighted Average Method

The weighted average method is known to be the most authentic and accurate method of CGPA calculation from SGPA. Moreover, its authenticity increases when there is a difference between the credit or weight assigned. In the following steps, this method is explained

  1. Write down all semesters’ SGPAs along with the corresponding credits or weights assigned.
  2. Now multiply SGPAs by the credits of that semester.
  3. Add all the values you get from the multiplication, say it value 1.
  4. Add the credits of all semesters, name it value 2.
  5. Divide the sum of multiplied values by the sum of credits.

For example,

Semester

SGPA

Credits

Total

1

7.3

22

160.6

2

7.9

20

158

3

8.1

18

145.8

4

7.8

20

156

Sum of multiplied SGPAs = 160.6+158+145.8+156 = 620.4

Sum of credits       = 22+20+18+20 = 80

CGPA = 7.75

Method 2: Simple Average Method

This second method should be used when all semesters have the same credits. This method is explained in the following steps

  1. Sum up all the SGPA of a student
  2. Divide it by the no of semesters

For example

SGPA scores of semesters are 7.5,9.1,8.5, and 7.6

If we add them, the sum will be = 7.5+9.1+8.5+7.6 = 32.7

Now to calculate CGPA = 32.7 / 4

CGPA = 8.17

SGPA to CGPA Conversion Formula

As explained before, there are two ways to calculate CGPA from SGPA. One is simple: if the same credits are given for each semester, simply take the average of the SGPA. In case of different credits for each semester following formula will be used.

CGPA = (Σ [SGPA × Semester Credits]) ÷ Total Credits

What is SGPA?

Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) is a grading system for students’ assessment for a specific semester. Mostly in universities, GPAs are assigned against each subject, which shows a student’s performance in that specific subject. When GPAs of all subjects are multiplied by the corresponding credit hours of the subjects, then the product is divided by the sum of credit hours. Let’s learn with an example

Subject No 1 A+ grade (10) credit 3 – 10 x 3 =30

Subject No 2 B grade (8) credit 4- 8 x 4 =32

Subject No 3 A grade (9) credit 2 – 9 x 2 =18

Subject No 4 A graded (9) credit 3 – 9 x 3 =27

Now add points – 30+32+18+27 = 107

Add total credit – 3+4+2+3 = 12

And SGPA will be – 107 / 12 = 8.91

What is CGPA?

The cumulative grade point average (CGPA) is a grading system that assesses a student’s overall performance throughout the degree. It makes it easy and understandable how a student performed in semesters. The calculation of CGPA is explained in the above paragraphs.
